Verse 1
The temple walls lay broken,
The work had ceased for years,
But God called Zerubbabel,
And calmed His people’s fears.
The task seemed overwhelming,
Their strength would not suffice,
Then came the Lord’s own promise,
A word of hope and life.
Pre-Chorus
The Lord reminded them that day,
His work would find a way.
Chorus
Not by might, nor by power,
But by my Spirit, saith the LORD;
Not by might, nor by power,
But by my Spirit, saith the LORD.
Not by might, nor by power,
But by my Spirit, saith the LORD of hosts;
Not by might, nor by power,
But by my Spirit, saith the LORD.
Verse 2
Though enemies opposed them,
Though mountains blocked their way,
The Lord renewed their courage,
To work and to obey.
The hands that laid the foundation
Would see the temple rise,
For God would keep His promise,
His truth would never die.
Pre-Chorus
The Lord who called them to the task
Would give the strength they lacked.
Chorus
Not by might, nor by power,
But by my Spirit, saith the LORD;
Not by might, nor by power,
But by my Spirit, saith the LORD.
Not by might, nor by power,
But by my Spirit, saith the LORD of hosts;
Not by might, nor by power,
But by my Spirit, saith the LORD.
Bridge
When all our strength is failing,
When hope seems far away,
We trust the Holy Spirit,
And follow God’s own way.
The work is not accomplished
By what our hands can do;
The power belongs to Jesus,
The power belongs to Jesus,
Our strength comes from Him too.
Final Chorus
Not by might, nor by power,
But by my Spirit, saith the LORD;
Not by might, nor by power,
But by my Spirit, saith the LORD.
Not by might, nor by power,
Not by might, nor by power,
But by my Spirit, saith the LORD of hosts;
Not by might, nor by power,
But by my Spirit, saith the LORD.
Outro
But by my Spirit,
Saith the LORD of hosts.
